About Our Courses
Course 1 – All Species Lumber Grading
This in-depth course is specifically designed to fully explain the fundamentals of lumber grading to individuals new to the industry or those currently employed in production, distribution, and the value-added remanufacturing sector. Students are taught a uniform application of the NLGA and R List grading rules so that consistent quality values exist throughout the forest industry.
This superior online grading course is PLIB certified and consists of two semesters, each containing ten professionally created PowerPoint presentation lessons with high-impact visual effects, audio narration, and subtitles. Homework assignments and quizzes at the end of each lesson have been carefully crafted to reinforce the learned outcomes.
At the end of each completed semester, students will participate in a scheduled hands-on 50-piece practical review followed by a hands-on 50-piece practical exam. Upon completion of both semesters, there will be a 100-question theory exam. A student is required to achieve a weighted overall result of 70% to successfully obtain a certified lumber grading ticket.
Course materials included are colorized grading reference tables and homework assignments for each lesson. The grading reference tables are permitted for use during the practical reviews and exams, but no reference materials are allowed during the theory exam.
The required textbooks for the course are the National Lumber Grades Authority rule book, the Canadian Lumber Grading Manual, and the Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau EXPORT R LIST grading and dressing rule book, which can be ordered in advance through the ER Mill Services website. Reference materials will be distributed to students upon registration.
